In the eighth match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Punjab Kings (PBKS) prevailed over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a closely-fought contest and registered a thrilling five-run victory at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. After the win, Shikhar Dhawan's team rose to second place in the points table with two wins in as many games played. While Punjab won the game, the franchise had a major injury scare to one of their overseas batters.
Dhawan played a captain's knock for PBKS as none of the RR bowlers could trouble the stylish southpaw once he was set. But Dhawan's clean hitting ended up injuring his teammate Bhanuka Rajapaksa who scored a half-century in PBKS' opening game. After the game, the Sri Lankan batter put out a Tweet and offered an update on his injury.
"So happy for the win @PunjabKingsIPL! Thank you all for checking up on me. The X-rays have cleared me of any broken bones/fractures! Plenty of ice needed but I'm doing fine!" Rajapaksa said in a Tweet.
The incident took place in the 11th over of PBKS' innings. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled one full and Dhawan slapped it back. Rajapaksa at the non-striker's end did not have much time to get out of the way and the ball hit him on the right arm.
Rajapaksa needed immediate medical attention as Royals' physios rushed to the field. The spray was applied followed by the bandage. The Sri Lankan batter was in agonising pain and could not continue to bat.
Rajapaksa went off the field and Jitesh Sharma came to bat at no.4. The 31-year-old got retired hurt and did not take further part in the game.Â
