Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper David Warner broke a decade-old Indian Premier League (IPL) record with a six at his former franchise’s homeground on April 24. Warner now holds the record for most runs scored by a batter in an IPL season before hitting a six.
Warner scored 290 runs in the ongoing season before smashing Washington Sundar for a six in the fourth over. The previous record belonged to Mandeep Singh who scored 260 runs from 223 balls including 36 fours. Mandeep played for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) then.
The southpaw has scored 306 runs from seven innings at an average of 43.71 including four half-centuries. However, his strike rate of 119.53 has been under the scanner.
Before the season, Warner had a total of 216 sixes to his name. In the previous season, he had hit 15 sixes for DC.
Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Warner started slow and scored just one run from nine deliveries. He let loose in the fourth over with a four and a six off Sundar. It was also the first six of powerplay overs for DC in the season. In the sixth over, Sarfaraz Khan hit a six as well.
The Aussie opener lost his wicket to Sundar in the eighth over. He scored 21 runs from 20 balls including two fours and a six. He became Sundar’s first wicket of the season. The off-spinner took two more wickets from the over. Sarfaraz and Aman Hakim Khan lost their wickets in the eighth over as well as DC lost half the side for 62.
“Looks a nice surface, has got a nice even sheen to it. If you put a good total on the board, you can defend it. It's about being consistent. We got to start well in the first 6 with bat and ball. My mindset is to thank the crowd, they've been a great support. For me, it's about entertaining them. Absolutely love this venue, I owe it to the fans,” Warner said after winning the toss and opting to bat first at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
