'Don't get too close to the action': Devon Conway explains why MS Dhoni was not happy with umpires over spider cam's interference

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by eight runs in a high-scoring affairs but skipper MS Dhoni had a frustrating day at the office. After several dropped catches from his teammates, Dhoni had trouble taking the catch himself when Glenn Maxwell hit one in the night sky in the 13th over of the run chase.

Dhoni who is usually calm while taking high catches was clearly struggling to sight the ball.  While the wicketkeeper ended up taking the catch without fumbling, he did not celebrate Maxwell’s catch and immediately had a word with umpire regarding the spidercam.

After the thrilling win for the 'Men in Yellow', the 'Player of the match' Devon Conway pointed out that it was not easy for fielders to sighn the ball because of the shadown of hovering spider cam.

"It (interference) happened a couple of times where the ball had got very close to the spider cam as well as the wires, that can obviously put a fielder off. I think Faf stepped away a couple of times because the shadows of the spidercam were in his way. It's obviously a little bit testing for guys," said Conway in the post-match press conference.

"It's nice to have that technology to show different angles of the game but there come a point where (it) can't get too involved and interfere with the game. MS (Dhoni) was probably trying to speak to the umpires, saying 'don't get too close to the action and try to avoid too much (of what's) going on," the southpaw added.

Dhoni took both important catches of Maxwell and RCB skipper Faf du Plessis who were going all guns blazing in the match.

Opening the innings for CSK, Conway scored 83 runs from 45 deliveries including six fours and as many sixes. He shared crucial partnerships with Ajinkya Rahane (37) and Shivam Dube (52). He missed out on a chance of becoming second Kiwi batter to score a century in IPL as he lost his wicket ot Harshal Patel in the 16th over.

"Tonight (Monday) was a really good surface to bat on, so for us to get those big totals it's about trying to create a strike rate of around 200-plus," the southpaw said.

"I didn't manage to achieve that (200-plus rate) but some of the work done by the other players, like Ajinkya, Dube, Rayudu and Moeen Ali in the end, they all chipped in with really good strike rates and that's what got us to a very competitive total.

"That's probably the method on this kind of wicket where it's really good to bat," the left-handed batter with 184.44 strike rate in the encounter further added.
