IPL 2022: When Rishabh Pant's latest no-ball fracas evoked MS Dhoni's similar act in 2019 with RR in common

The Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) ended on a dramatic note on Friday (April 22). The high-scoring thriller was halted for a moment when a no-ball fracas erupted in the final over.

Drama ensued in the Royals' 15-run win over Capitals on Friday when the third delivery off the final over, a hip-high full-toss from Obed McCoy, was whacked by Rovman Powell for a six but the DC camp demanded it be called a no ball for height. However, the umpire refuse to adjudge it as a no ball which saw Rishabh Pant seeming trying to call back the players and forfeit the game.

Not just this, even DC's assistant coach Pravin Amre was seen storming into the field to convey his stance for which he has been penalised with a fine of 100 per cent match fee and ban for a match. DC skipper Pant was also fined 100 per cent of his match fee.

This is not the first time that this has happened in IPL. The fresh no-ball controversy has now stirred an incident from IPL 2019, when the then CSK skipper MS Dhoni was also embroiled in a similar sort of situation.

It was the game between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royals in 2019 and it was the legendary MS Dhoni, who lost his cool and stormed into the field.

Incidentally, that controversy also took place over a no-ball decision in the final over of the game that too with the same team RR. Ben Stokes delivered a high full-toss which was declared legitimate by the on-field umpires. What followed next was unthinkable, as Dhoni furiously entered the ground and argued with the umpires for a while. Although there was no change in the decision, CSK eventually won that contest by four wickets.

As Amre stormed into the field to oppose the umpire’s decision, Dhoni’s old clip went viral with fans recalling the former CSK skipper’s infamous actions. It must be noted that Dhoni is known for his calm demeanour and seldom one will see him losing his temper on the field. However, such was the significance of the decision that even the talismanic wicketkeeper-batter did the unthinkable.
