Chennai Super Kings (CSK) handed Ravindra Jadeja the captaincy reins for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 but things did not work out in either the team's or the player's favour. He skippered the side for eight matches, winning just two, after which, the captaincy was given back to Dhoni for the remainder of IPL 2022.
In the end, Jadeja was ruled out of the tournament with a rib cage injury, while the change in captaincy did nothing to change the team's fortune. They went on to finish ninth and many were of the opinion that Jadeja's time with the franchise was done.
But a recent report by CricBuzz reveals that ahead of the upcoming 2023 edition of the glitzy league, Dhoni had an honest long one-on-one chat with Jadeja, and this was key in keeping the all-rounder at the franchise for at least one more season. The report added that Jadeja also had a chat with the CEO of the franchise Kasi Viswanathan to help clear any misunderstandings.
According to the report, Jadeja was not pleased about being stripped off the captaincy midway through the season, and how the leadership responsibilities affected his performances. However, the all-rounder explained in detail what the franchise had in their mind, and what Dhoni expects going forward with the franchise and the player.
Jadeja turned out in 10 games in IPL 2022 for CSK, where he scored just 119 runs at an average of 19 and managed to pick just five wickets. CSK finished 9th with just 4 wins in 14 matches.
During a recent conversation with Star Sports, Jadeja revealed that he owed his cricketing journey to two Mahendras, his coach and his captain Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings.
"I told Mahi bhai, that my cricketing journey has been between Mahendra Singh Chauhan, my coach in Jamnagar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, my captain at CSK. My cricketing journey has really been between these two Mahendras," said Jadeja on Star Sports.
The star all-rounder missed most of the action that India played in 2022 after his injury concerns but made a ceremonious return to the team with his performances with both bat and ball in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings will begin their campaign against the defending champions Gujarat Titans on March 31.
