Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper David Warner reached 3000 runs as a captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during his team's match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday, April 11. Warner, who has won the coveted trophy with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during his time as the captain of the franchise, is also the among fastest to 6000 runs in the cash-rich league's history.
Only two other captains have crossed 3000 runs in the history of the IPL. They are Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Kohli was previously the skipper of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) while Dhoni has won the IPL five times as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Kohli leads the line with 4881 runs to his name and MS Dhoni has 4582 runs to his name as the captain of CSK and the erstwhile Rising Pune Super Giants (RPSG). They are also the only two players in the history of the tournament with more than 4000 runs as the team's skipper.
In addition to the above-mentioned three captains, only two other players have more than 3000 IPL runs as the skipper of the team. They are the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma and former IPL-winning captain with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Gautam Gambhir.
The Australian batting stalwart needed just two runs to complete this achievement, something that he did early in the match. Warner opened the batting with Prithvi Shaw, with the two batters hoping to prevent a fourth straight loss in the competition. The two started off on a bright note and put together a rapid start before Prithvi got out in an attempt to hit a big shot against off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen.
Warner has recently been criticised over his batting approach. His half-centuries have come at a strike rate of below 120, which displeased former India batter Virender Sehwag.
The former Delhi batter advised Warner to not play in the IPL if this was the standard of cricket that he brought to the tournament.
On the night at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, Warner started in an attacking manner and has an unbeaten 51 off 46 balls at the time of writing. Meanwhile, it was Axar Patel who took the game to the opponents with his 25-ball 54, but the all-rounder was caught by Arshad Khan off Jason Behrendorff's bowling.
