The Gujarat Titans (GT) secured an impressive five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opening match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season in Ahmedabad on Friday, March 31. It was a hard-fought victory which needed a herculean effort from the batters and bowlers of both teams and in the end, it was the home side that prevailed as they look to defend their trophy.

Put in to bat first by the Gujarat-based franchise, the Super Kings' batting unit was guided by Ruturaj Gaikwad's 92 runs from 50 balls as the side posted 178 runs for the loss of 20 overs. However, CSK’s total was not enough, with the GT, riding on Shubman Gill’s 63 off 36 balls, GT chased down the required total with four balls to spare and lost only five wickets.

During the match, some moments were happening for the first time in the history of the tournament. At first, the teams gave the playing XIs after the toss as opposed to during. And then, the CSK side brought in Tushar Deshpande as the first-ever impact player in the history of the tournament, in place of Ambati Rayadu.

Meanwhile, one of the Titans' players also created his own piece of special history when he called for a review off a wide ball!

Vijay Shankar, in the 18th over of the match, tried to earn his team an extra run when he called a review on a wide ball off Rajvardhan Hangargekar's bowling. It was a wide on the crease, wide full toss delivery, which was immediately reviewed by Shankar.

Such calls are usually subjective But since Shankar had gone over the tram line, the original decision stayed and their opponents lost one of the reviews.

This is the first time that a review was taken for a wide or a no-ball. Before, this rule was applied in the Women's Premier League (WPL) successfully.
