The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is knocking on the doors of cricket fans in India and around the world as teams have begun their preparation for the two-month-long extravaganza which will open on March 31 with a clash between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings.
The league has gone from strength to strength since the inaugural season in 2008, with some of the best players proving their worth in the competition and making their name and their careers in the IPL. Across the long history of the tournament, many teams have come and gone, but barring Deccan Chargers, who are now the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the core of teams has remained the same.
IPL 2022 was iconic in the sense that the league expanded to 10 teams, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting seasons of the franchise-based tournament. With one of the new teams winning the coveted trophy, we look at 15 past winners of the IPL, from 2008 to 2022.
IPL 2008: The Rajasthan Royals (RR) captured the first-ever IPL title after beating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 3 wickets in the final under the captaincy of Shane Warne.
IPL 2009: Deccan Chargers, captained by Adam Gilchrist, won the second edition of IPL when they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six runs in the final.
IPL 2010: Chennai Super Kings won their first title in 2010 when they beat Mumbai Indians by 22 runs.
IPL 2011: CSK won back-to-back IPL trophies with a win over the RCB by 58 runs in the final.
IPL 2012: Chennai Super Kings once again reached the final but Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) broke defeated them by five wickets in the final as Gautam Gambhir and his team made KKR champion for the first time.
IPL 2013: Reaching another final and losing a second straight time, the Chennai Super Kings were beaten by the Mumbai Indians (MI), who won their first IPL title.
IPL 2014: Kolkata Knight Riders made a great comeback and under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir, the team won the IPL title for the second time with a victory over Kings XI Punjab by three wickets in the final.
IPL 2015: CSK once again reached the final but MI once again defeated MS Dhoni's side by 41 runs.
IPL 2016: After CSK and MI dominance, there was a change of pace in 2016, with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore playing the final. Virat Kohli's team once again failed in the final hurdle as Hyderabad captured the title by eight runs.
IPL 2017: Mumbai Indians clashed with Dhoni's Rising Pune Supergiants in 2017, and Mumbai became the champion after defeating Pune by 1 one run.
IPL 2018: Sunrisers Hyderabad once again reached the final and met a resilient CSK side, who won their third title by beating SRH by 8 wickets in the final.
IPL 2019: Mumbai Indians made a comeback in 2019, and once again condemned CSK to a loss in what was a very exciting tournament.
IPL 2020: In 2020, MI created history and became the first team to win 5 IPL titles with a five-wicket win over the Delhi Capitals.
IPL 2021: Chennai reached the IPL final once again, their ninth in 14 editions. Under the captaincy of Dhoni, CSK beat KKR to win their fourth title.
IPL 2022: In the very first edition, one of the teams was Gujarat Titans (GT) captained by Hardik Pandya, which beat Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets to win the trophy in their first season in the IPL.
