Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced South African all-rounder Aiden Markram as the team's new skipper on Thursday, February 23, in what is an unsurprising move made by the 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL) champions.
Markram was the captain of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, which won the final of the recently-concluded SA20 league in South Africa, beating Pretoria Capitals in the final. His next assignment will be to take over the captaincy for Hyderabad from Kane Williamson.
Williamson was captain of the side for three seasons. There were many contenders for the captaincy role with Mayank Agarwal also roped in after being released by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) whom he captained before.
"Becoming the captain is not the be-all and end-all. You can be in some form of leadership role too. But I am okay with captaincy, it's something that I enjoy doing," Markram had said ahead of the SA20 final against Pretoria Capitals.
"I have been captaining for a while before this tournament started. It's been a nice experience, a fresh start, I would say," he added.
Markram scored 381 runs in 14 matches for SRH at an average of 47.63 in 2022. For the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the South African batter scored a hundred in the semifinal against the Joburg SuperKings to help them reach the final where they defeated the Pretoria Capitals to win the SA 20 title.
He also captained the side that won the 2014 ICC U-19 World Cup, which is the only ICC trophy that South Africa have won in the last 20 years!
