England opener Jason Roy has been handed a two-match ban (suspended for 12 months) and fined 2,500 pounds by England Cricket Board (ECB). The nature of the disciplinary breach has not been revealed by ECB.
“A Disciplinary Panel of the Cricket Discipline Commission has announced its sanction on Jason Roy after he admitted a charge of conducting himself in a manner which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the game of cricket, the ECB and himself into disrepute, in breach of ECB Directive 3.3,” the ECB statement read.
Roy has till March 31, 2022 to pay the fine to the board. The 31-year-old will be available for the next two England matches. His two-match ban is suspended for 12 months. However, it is dependent on the Durban-born cricketer's good behaviour.
Roy has not played for England since January 30, 2022. He recently represented Quetta Gladiators in the seventh season of Pakistan Super League (PSL). He was picked by new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) in the mega auction for his base price of Rs 2 crore but decided to withdraw due to bubble fatigue and the need to spend time with family.
Roy also took a short, indefinite break from his County side Surrey. He will be unavailable for the early rounds of County Championship.
“After more than two years living under COVID restrictions and in a number of bubbles, I feel now is the right time to be with my wife and young children. I’d like to thank all of the Surrey coaching staff for their patience and Surrey Members for their understanding. I will be following the team closely while I’m away from the game and working hard to be at my best when I do get back to the middle,” Roy had revealed in a social media post.
