During the high-octane Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 13 (Saturday), third umpire Yeshwant Barde’s controversial no-ball decision led to an unfortunate incident at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
The incident took place in the penultimate over of SRH's innings. Avesh Khan bowled a high full toss which was signaled a no-ball by the on-field umpire. LSG skipper Krunal Pandya reviewed the decision. At first, it looked like the on-field decision will stay but the third umpire felt that Abdul Samad crouched a little and adjudged it a legitimate delivery.
Following the decision, Heinrich Klaasen had a heated exchange with the umpire. Samad was shocked by the decision as well and had a conversation with the square-leg umpire.
Next ball, Klaasen pulled and a top edge went for a boundary. Following the boundary, there was a disturbance near the LSG dugout. While it was earlier reported that fans threw nuts and bolts at the LSG dugout, LSG fielding coach Jonty Rhodes shed more light on the unfortunate incident and confirmed that things were thrown at Prerak Mankad when he was fielding at long-on.
Rhodes took to Twitter and wrote, "Not at the dugout, but at the players. They hit Prerak Mankad on the head while he was fielding at long on."
After the incident, the LSG players and support staff were on the ground away from the dugout to evade if the crowd hurls anything else. LSG coach Andy Flower has having a conversation with the umpire as well.
Meanwhile, LSG continued their dominance over SRH as they ended up winning the game by seven wickets at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium to boost their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. Prerak Mankad’s perfect anchor knock and Nicholas Pooran’s brutal hitting turned the game upside down as they chased down 183 with four balls to spare despite a slow start.
