Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Jos Buttler could not break Virat Kohli’s record for most runs in a single Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 but added few records against his name with 39-run knock in the final. Buttler broke Kohli's record for most runs against pacers in a single season. The English wicketkeeper-batter has 619 runs in IPL 2022 whereas Kohli had 609 runs in 2016.
Also, Buttler surpassed Delhi Capitals (DC) opener David Warner’s tally of 848 runs which he scored in 2016 season when he led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to the title win. Buttler now has 863 runs from 17 games at an average of 57.53 including four centuries and four half-centuries.
Buttler became the first batter to score 200 or more runs in the history of IPL playoffs. He broke Warner’s record of 190 runs.
Buttler not only became the first-ever English batter but first Royals’ batter to win the orange cap. Another astonishing record Buttler achieved in the season is the highest average against spin bowlers. He maintained an average of 243 for the Sanju Samson-led side.
He scored 374 runs in the powerplay overs which is the third-highest in a season by a batter. Warner holds the record with 467 runs during fielding restrictions, followed by Adam Gilchrist (382 runs in 2009 season for now-defunct Deccan Chargers.
Earlier, Buttler scored a century in the first qualifier against Titans and became the second batter after Kohli to score four centuries in a season.
The 31-year-old hit 83 fours and 45 sixes in the season. This is the fourth-highest number of sixes in an IPL season. In addition, he scored joint-third most fours in a season. While the record for most sixes belongs to Chris Gayle (59 sixes), Warner tops the list of most fours.
Buttler scored 39 runs from 35 deliveries including five fours. He top-scored in Royals' first innings score of 130/9.
