Harry Brook justified Sunrisers Hyderabad's Rs 13.25 crore windfall as he cracked Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023's first century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens stadium on Friday (April 14).
Brook shattered Jonny Bairstow's record as he whacked a 55-ball ton which is the joint fastest century by any SRH's batter beside former skipper David Warner who now represents Delhi Capitals (DC). Bairstow belted a 56-ball ton in IPL 2019.
The 24-year-old smartly converted his maiden half-century in and powered it to highest score of the IPL 2023 so far. Brook's century, which is his second T20 ton, was studded with three maximums and 12 fours which helped SRH post a colossal total of 228/4
Notably, out of the last 14 centuries in the IPL, seven have been scored by English batters.
Ben Stokes (1)
Jos Buttler (5)
Harry Brook (1)
Brook failed to go big in his first three games of the IPL 2023 as in his debut game, he could just score 13 off 21 balls against Rajasthan Royals and was clean bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal. He fell to a leg-spinner in the second game too as he was dismissed by Ravi Bishnoi for 3 off 4 balls. After the twin failures, he was promoted as an opener in the third game. The promotion, however, did not make much of a difference as he was out for 13 off 14 balls against Punjab Kings.
Brook finally got his mojo back in the match against KKR as he opened the innings for SRH yet again. The star English batter targeted KKR's star pacer Umesh Yadav who he smoked two sixes and three boundaries in his two-over spell in the PowerPlay. However, KKR's spinners tried to put a leash on Brook's batting. But Brook was in no hurry as he patiently steered to half century which came in about 32 balls before the pacers returned.
Brook changed the gear from 15th over while facing Lockie Ferguson and started bashing bowlers all around the park. Brook smashed one maximum and four boundaries in Lockie's over. Brook continued his blitzkrieg and completed his century in the 20th over. Besides him SRH skipper Aiden Markram played a second fiddle with an impressive knock of 50 off 26.
