Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul was subjected to a fine of Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during the franchise's game against Rajasthan Royals. Rahul's men managed to win the game by 10 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
"Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match against the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, on Wednesday," IPL said in a release.
"As it was the team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Rahul was fined Rs 12 lakhs," the release added.
The IPL aims for matches to finish in three hours and 20 minutes, but slow over rate is proving to be an issue, with several games stretching past the four-hour mark.
Kyle Mayers top-scored with 51 off 42 balls as LSG posted 154 for seven. In reply, RR were restricted to 144 for six in 20 overs, with Avesh Khan taking three wickets for LSG.
"We came in yesterday and we were thinking 180 is a par score. Knowing the batters they have, the mindset was to get 15 runs extra. When Boult bowled the first over, me and Kyle had a chat and we said that the ball was not coming on. We assessed it quite well but if there were a couple more partnerships in the middle, we could have gotten more," Rahul said after the game against RR.
KL Rahul's men began their season on the right note as they trounced Delhi Capitals but lost their second game against the Super Kings. They won two consecutive matches from thereon before facing a defeat against Punjab Kings. LSG are back on track as they won their game against RR. The Super Giants have eight points in six matches with an NRR of 0.709 and are currently second on the points table.
Lucknow will face Gujarat Titans on April 22.
