Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered their first win of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season at MA Chidambaram Stadium. CSK beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 12 runs in a high-scoring affair. Moeen Ali impressed with an economical four-fer whereas the 110-run opening partnership between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway followed by cameos helped CSK post a mammoth total on the board.

Mayers' explosive knock

LSG's run chase got off to a good start. In-form Kyle Mayers targetted Ben Stokes with two fours and one six. Mayers went after Chahar as well hitting him for three fours. Tushar Deshpande bowled an 11-ball over conceding 18 runs from it. Chahar went for three boundaries in his fifth over as well. Mayers got to his half-century from just 21 balls. Moeen Ali broke the opening partnership in the sixth over. The Caribbean batter scored 53 runs from 22 balls including eight fours and two sixes. After powerplay overs, LSG had 80/1 on the board.

Wickets in middle overs

Deepak Hooda could not justify the no.3 position and lost his wicket to Mitchell Santner after scoring just two runs. Out-of-form Rahul then fell to Ali. He scored 20 runs from 18 balls. Ali struck again and got the wicket of Krunal Pandya. Nicholas Pooran provided the much-needed boost in the 12th over. Pooran hit Rajvardhan Hangargekar for a six followed by two fours. Marcus Stoinis supported Pooran but the pressure got the better of him. Ali in his final over hit the stumps as Stoinis got out for an 18-ball 21.

Pooran's effort in vain

In the 15th over, Pooran took on Ravindra Jadeja hitting him for two sixes. Deshpande got the big wicket of Pooran in his second over. The Caribbean wicketkeeper-batter scored 32 runs from 18 balls including two fours and three sixes. In the 17th over, Krishnappa Gowtham tried to keep up with the required run rate. He got dropped by Shivam Dube as well. Hangargekar bowled a brilliant penultimate over conceding nine runs from it. LSG needed 28 runs from the final over. Gowtham and Ayush Badoni could not hit one out of the park. Badoni got dismissed off the third ball of the final over. He scored 23 runs from 18 balls. Mark Wood hit a four and a six off the final two deliveries but it could get LSG's score to 205/7 as they lost the game by 12 runs.

Gaikwad-Conway go big

Earlier, Rahul won the toss and opted to field first. The move backfired as Gaikwad and Conway dominated in the powerplay overs. Gaikwad hit Gowtham for three sixes in the fifth over. Even Wood turned out to be expensive as CSK posted 79/0 after six overs, their highest powerplay score at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Gaikwad got to his half-century from 25 deliveries. Conway joined the party as well and hit Pandya for two sixes in the eighth over. Ravi Bishnoi got the breakthrough in the 10th over. Gaikwad went for the big shot but all he could manage was a leading edge. Wood took an excellent catch at short third man. The opener scored 57 runs from 31 balls including three fours and four sixes. The two shared a 110-run partnership. Conway followed Gaikwad to the dressing room. The Kiwi opener lost his wicket to Wood in the 11th over. The southpaw scored 47 runs from 29 balls including five fours and two sixes.

Camoes take CSK past 200

Dube came out all guns blazing and hit three sixes and one four in his short stay at the crease. He lost his wicket to Bishnoi in the 14th over. He scored 27 runs from 16 balls. In his last over, Bishnoi struck again. He got Ali stumped. The England all-rounder scored 19 runs from 13 balls. In a high-scoring affair, Bishnoi conceded just 28 runs and took three wickets. Ben Stokes could not make a mark once again. Stokes lost his wicket to a slower one from Avesh Khan. In the 18th over, Ambati Rayudu hit Wood for two sixes. In the final over, Jadeja went for the big shot against Wood but got caught at mid-wicket by Bishnoi. In the final over, Dhoni walked out to bat and hit two consecutive sixes. Wood managed to get Dhoni's wicket with a 151.2kmph delivery. Dhoni's cameo helped CSK post 217/7 on the board.
