No 'no ball', catch taken but still Shubman Gill doesn't leave field in IPL 2021 final

Shubman Gill caught a lucky break in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 final as he was not given out even when Ambati Rayudu took a clean catch and Ravindra Jadeja did not overstep. In the 10th over of KKR run chase, Gill launched the ball in the air but did not get the distance to carry it over the boundary. Rayudu was celebrating the catch and it seemed like Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got their first breakthrough but Gill stayed in the middle while the on-field umpires had a chat.

To the naked eye, it looked like a regular dismissal but the replay showed that the ball went a big too high and hit the spider-cam wire on its way before landing in Rayudu’s safe hands. Gill got the rare reprieve and continued to bat as the on-field umpire signalled dead ball.

Gill got lucky as even if the ball had not hit the wire, it would not have crossed the boundary and landed in Rayudu’s hands. He was batting on 27 from 25 deliveries when he got a second chance.

The KKR opener went on to score his third half-century of the season. The 22-year-old scored 51 runs from 43 deliveries before getting out leg before wicket to Deepak Chahar in the 14th over trying to play a scoop shot.

Gill could not accelerate when wickets were falling at the other end and left the run chase when the required run rate was going up.
