Rishabh Pant in a heated exchange with umpire again over no-ball call despite facing 100 per cent match fee punishment

Rishabh Pant is in the centre of controversy again over no ball call. In the clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Pant lost his cool in the 17th over when umpire Anil Kumar Chaudhary signalled no-ball for above-waist high delivery. Pant walked up to the umpire and had a few words. Umpire Chaudhary remained calm and explained to the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper why it was called a no-ball.

It was right-arm off-spinner Lalit Yadav’s third over. He bowled a loose delivery to Nitish Rana which was hit for a six over deep point. Rana could not make full use of the free hit delivery and managed just a single.

The umpiring standards in the ongoing IPL 2022 have been questionable but the call against Rana was correct as the left-handed batter was not crouching.

What happened in previous game?

In the previous game, Pant was unhappy with the no-ball call which was not given in the last over of DC’s run chase against Rajasthan Royals (RR). It led to the wicketkeeper-batter calling his batters back to the pavilion in an attempt to forfeit the match. However, the batters did not walk off.

The 23-year-old even sent assistant coach Pravin Amre to the middle to talk to the umpire about the close call against Rovman Powell. All of this happened in the absence of head coach Ricky Ponting from the dugout. After getting out of five-day quarantine, Ponting admitted to breaking a few remotes and water bottles while watching the clash against Royals.

As a result, the southpaw was fined 100 per cent of his match fees for breaching the code of conduct. Along with him Shardul Thakur was fined 50 per cent of his match fees whereas Amre was banned from the KKR game. A

The partnership

Rana went on to score 57 runs from 34 deliveries including three fours and four sixes before getting dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman in the last over of the innings. Rana and Rinku Singh rescued KKR from a batting collapse as they put on a 62-run stand for the seventh wicket. This is the second-highest seventh-wicket partnership for KKR in IPL.
