While few former cricketers have been advocating a suspension on Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Virat Kohli and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Yuvraj Singh has come up with a hilarious solution to solve their differences. Yuvraj wants a beverage brand to sign them for their next campaign as he asked the two to cool down after a heated exchange that has fans divided.
After the ugly verbal spat between the two, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) fined them 100 per cent match fee for committing Level 2 offence under Article 2.21 of Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct.
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar feels that the stiff fine won’t have an impact and wants the cricket body to suspend as it calls for a stricter punishment.
"So, my point, do something which will make sure, these things don't happen again. If it has to… you know, like it happened with Harbhajan and Sreesanth 10 years ago, that you have to ask them for maybe step aside for a couple of matches. Make sure you do something that ensure that these things don't happen and also something that will hurt the team. That's a stiff one," he said.
On the other hand, Virender Sehwag believes that it is setting a bad example for young cricketers as they may look to copy their idols actions on the field.
“If the BCCI decides to ban anyone, then maybe such incidents will happen rarely or not take place at all. Such incidents have happened several times in the past so it’s better to do whatever you want inside the controlled environment of the dressing room,” Sehwag said.
“When you’re on the ground, these things don’t look nice. My own kids can lip-read and they very well understand Ben Stokes. So that is when I feel bad. If you’re saying such things, if my kids can read it, others can too and tomorrow they will think that if they (Kohli and Gambhir) can say it, so can I,” he added.
Yuvraj, Gambhir and Kohli were teammates when India lifted the ODI World Cup after a long wait of 28 years. While Yuvraj won the ‘Player of the series’ award, Gambhir and Kohli’s partnership stabilised the run chase against Sri Lanka.
