Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mentor Gautam Gambhir who has defended skipper KL Rahul during his extended run in Test cricket, does not entirely agree with his statement that “strike rate is over-rated”. Gambhir believes that in context of T20 cricket, strike rate is more important than averages and it depends on one’s batting position.

“My thoughts are pretty simple. I think strike rates are important, but it also depends on what number you're batting at. So imagine if someone who's batting at number six or seven. I think his averages would be overrated, but his strike rate would be far more important. Someone batting at six or seven will always have less, less opportunity to score those big runs,” Gambhir told Sports Today at LSG’s jersey launch.

“So those ten balls, 2015 balls, 30, are as impactful as someone who's standing at the top of the order and getting that 80 or 90. So for me, I think depending on the positions, strike rates can be very, very important, especially if you want to win those games, those tight games,” he further explained.

Gambhir also gave an update on left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan who has been out of action for a long time due to injury. Mohsin took 14 wickets from nine games at an average of 14.07. His economy rate of 5.97 runs per over impressed many. It even led to calls from former cricketers to get fast-tracked to India’s T20I setup.

“Obviously Mohsin is getting back there where he wanted to be but not sure where he's going to start straight away because obviously, he hasn't played any cricket in last one year he had a major surgery as well. So hopefully he can recover quickly because the left armor with that height and with that pace is always a luxury to have and we all have seen that what impact he can have once he's 100% fit. So hopefully he can get 100% fit as quickly as possible, which is going to be another huge advantage for us,” Gambhir said as he was hopeful of Mohsin’s return.
