Punjab Kings (PBKS) finally realised his potential when he hit a match-winning century for Punjab Kings (PBKS) against Delhi Capitals (DC) at a crucial juncture of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Before IPL 2023, Prabhsimran's high score was 14 as he was picked on the basis of talent but wasn't considered in the starting lineup. Frustrated by not getting enough chances, Prabhsimran had a conversation with legendary Sachin Tendulkar which changed his approach towards the game.
Prabhsimran revealed that he was disappointed after not getting enough changes due to team combination. In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, he walked up to Mumbai Indians (MI) mentor Tendulkar and told him that he is getting 'restless'.
“He placed his arm on my shoulder and told me ‘You are here because you have worked hard. Think about them who are still toiling hard in domestic cricket, and are not picked by any team. Enjoy this phase. Train hard, and practice as per the match situation. Improve your game and it is not necessary that you will do well whenever you get a chance, but you will have that satisfaction. As an athlete, our job is to keep working hard and leave the rest to destiny,” the 22-year-old told Indian Express.
At the start of IPL 2023, the youngster was informed by PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan that he will get more chances in the absence of an injured Jonny Bairstow. The opener showed flashes of brilliance but registered single-digit scores including two golden ducks. But this time PBKS team management backed him. He hit a half-century and missed a couple. After two disappointing scores, Prabhsimran rescued PBKS from a collapse and became sixth uncapped Indian batter to score a century in IPL history.
After getting to his century, he folded his hands in celebration as if he is thanking his teammates and support staff for backing him. However, in the innings break, he revealed that he celebrates his centuries like this only in domestic cricket.
In the post-match presentation, he thanked the team management and senior players as he said, “I also speak to senior players who keep telling me to make sure that I take the game deep and make it big when I get a start. Really thankful to the management for the opportunities.”
