Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) uncapped bowler Tushar Deshpande bagged an unwanted record as he conceded 56 runs from his four overs in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 final. Deshpande now holds the record for most expensive bowling figures by an Indian bowler in IPL finals.
The previous record was held by Karanveer Singh who conceded 54 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2014 final. However, the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) bowler had taken four wickets as well.
More expensive IPL final spells
Two overseas bowlers have conceded more runs than Deshpande in IPL finals. For Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Shane Watson conceded 61 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2016 final. Watson is followed by Lockie Ferguson who conceded 56 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2021. Both Watson and Ferguson remained wicketless.
Most runs in IPL season
Deshpande also broke the record for most runs conceded by a bowler in an IPL season. Deshpande conceded 564 runs from 16 games at an economy rate of 9.92 runs per over. The previous record belonged to Rajasthan Royals (RR) pacer Prasidh Krishna who conceded 551 runs at an economy rate of 8.28 runs per over in IPL 2022.
Worst economy rate in last 5 overs
Deshpande has been very expensive in the last five overs of the innings. In IPL 2023, he conceded runs at 12.9 runs per over during this period. The previous record for worst economy rate from 16-20 overs (who bowled 15 overs in this period) belonged to Royals' James Faulkner who conceded runs at an economy rate of 11.9 runs per over.
Almost got Gill’s wicket
The 28-year-old pacer started off well in his first over. He was very close to getting the wicket of in-form Shubman Gill but Deepak Chahar dropped a regulation catch at backward square leg. In the next over, he was hit for three consecutive boundaries by Gill. He came back to bowl in the 17th over and Sai Sudharsan hit him for one six and three fours. In the penultimate over, he went for 18 runs including two sixes and a four. As a result, GT posted 214/4, the highest score in final.
CSK’s highest wicket-taker
Despite being expensive, Deshpande finished as CSK's highest wicket-taker in IPL 2023 with 21 wickets to his name. He was picked for Rs 20 lakh in the mega auction and retained for IPL 2023 by four-time IPL winners.
