Prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz Khan finally had his moment in the sun as he scored his maiden Test century and that too when India needed it the most. Sarfaraz punched the ball on the back foot for a four to reach his century from 110 balls in the 57th over on Day 4 of the first Test against New Zealand at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.ย
Sarfaraz reached his maiden Test ton in his fourth Test. This was also his 16th first-class century. As he reached the three figures, he took off his helmet and went for a run to celebrate the milestone. The coaching staff, players in the dressing room stood up and applauded Sarfarazโs century.ย
Sarfaraz was not a part of the initial playing XI. He got a chance as Shubman Gill had a stiff neck and wasnโt fit to play.ย
The 26-year-old became the 22nd Indian batter to register a duck and a hundred in a Test match. Before Sarfaraz, Shikhar Dhawan was the only Indian batter to get out for a duck and score a century against New Zealand. Former Indian opener achieved the feat at Eden Park, Auckland in 2014.
No wickets fall in first session
Before rain interrupted play and led to an early lunch break, Sarfaraz remained unbeaten forย 125 runs from 154 balls including 16 fours and three sixes. On the other end, Rishabh Pant was not out for 53 off 56 deliveries. Pant has hit three sixes and five fours so far. The partnership for the fourth wicket between Sarfaraz and Pant was 113 runs after the first session.
Sarfaraz enters elite list
Sarfaraz became the third Indian batter after Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammad Azaruddin to score a century in the third innings of a Test at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Gavaskar scored an unbeaten 103 against Pakistan in 193 whereas Azharuddin scored 102 against South Africa in 2000.ย The top spot belongs to West Indies' Clive Lloyd who scored 163 in 1974.
