Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah rested for New Zealand ODIs to manage workload

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced India's ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand, which is slated to start from January 11. India ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, who missed the team's last fifty-over assignment against South Africa due to a neck injury, has made his comeback and will lead the side. Batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will also be seen in the action in the ODI series against New Zealand.

Besides Gill, the BCCI have also added Shreyas Iyer in the squad, but his availability will be subject to fitness. Notably, Iyer, who will be Gill's deputy in the series, got a spleen injury in Australia while taking a catch during the third ODI at Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.

Why no Hardik and Bumrah in the India squad?

The Indian Cricket Board has rested Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya for the ODI series to manage their workload for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7. He is participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he will play only two matches, as communicated earlier in the email from Team India. He will bowl limited overs only in each match as part of his preparations for the T20 World Cup.

But what turned everyone's heads was, Ruturaj Gaikwad's omission from the squad. The omission is particularly unexpected considering Gaikwad's recent form during the ODI series against South Africa. During that tour, he proved his mettle by scoring a brilliant century
