Injury has ruled out Washington Sundar from the entire T20I series against New Zealand

The T20I series between India and New Zealand will start from January 21

In a big setback for India, their star all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand. Sports Tak understands that the reason behind Sundar's ouster is his side strain and doctors have advised him to stay away from cricket for a while and take proper rest. The 26-year-old is expected to report at NCA soon.

This follows his earlier withdrawal from the ODI leg of the tour, a result of an injury sustained during the series opener in Baroda.

His ongoing absence serves as a significant blow to the squad's balance, depriving India of one of their most dependable spin-bowling all-rounders. As the focus shifts to the T20I format, the team will have to navigate the opening clash at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Maharashtra.

Injury riddle haunts India ahead of T20 World Cup

Sundar's injury is particularly troubling for the Indian camp, coming less than a month before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup kicks off on February 7. His absence adds to a growing list of fitness concerns that the selection committee must navigate as they finalize the squad for the premier tournament in India and Sri Lanka.

Adding to the selection headache is the uncertain status of Tilak Varma. The young batter’s participation has been cast into doubt following a recent surgery, leaving a potential void in the middle order. With two key versatile players now sidelined, the race against the clock has intensified for the medical and coaching staff.

The Indian team management is currently facing a delicate balancing act. They will be hopeful that these setbacks are temporary and that both players can prove their fitness in time for the global event.

Sundar's injury occurred during the first ODI against New Zealand on January 11, when Washington Sundar reported acute discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling. The situation was concerning enough that he was forced to leave the field mid-match, with Nitish Kumar Reddy stepping in as a substitute fielder. Despite the pain, Sundar showed immense grit by returning to the crease during India’s pursuit of 301 runs, eventually scoring seven runs off seven balls to help secure the victory.

While he appeared to move freely during his brief batting stint, it is suspected that the physical exertion may have inadvertently worsened the underlying issue. In response, the BCCI medical team ordered comprehensive scans immediately following the match to determine the severity of the strain and prevent further long-term damage.

In the immediate aftermath, Ayush Badoni was drafted into the squad as a replacement for the final two ODIs. However, the situation regarding the T20I leg of the tour remains somewhat fluid; while reports suggest Sundar is unlikely to feature, the BCCI has yet to officially announce his withdrawal from the T20I squad or name a replacement for the upcoming matches in Maharashtra.
