Story Highlights:

Suryakumar Yadav has been going through a rough patch in T20Is

Suryakumar hasn't recorded a 50+ score in T20Is since 2024

India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav's form has been a big concern for the team for quite some time now. He failed to record a single 50+ score in the format in 2025 and had a average of less than 15. His last half-century in T20Is came back in October, 2024 when he played a fine knock of 75 against Bangladesh. His highest score in 2025 was 47* against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.

Despite his woeful form, Suryakumar doesn't intend to change anything in his batting that has provided him with success in the past. The 35-year-old didn't appear to be worried about his form in the slightest.

“I’ve been out of runs. But I can’t change my identity. I have decided to keep doing what I have been doing in the last three or four years so that has given me a lot of success," Suryakumar said during the pre-match press-conference.

“If the performance comes, I’ll take it, if it doesn’t, it’s back to the drawing board. I’m still batting in the nets the way I always have," he added.

Suryakumar reiterates his responsibility as captain

Suryakumar also said that the team is bigger than him and their form is what the concern should be. He added that his reponsibility as the captain is to ensure that the team performs well on the field and comes out victorious.

“Had I been playing a single (individual) sport like TT or tennis, I would have worried about my form. But this is team sport and my first responsibility is to ensure that my team does well," Suryakumar stated.

“If team wins, I am happy and if I can contribute in team’s success then fine and if not, doesn’t matter as it can happen. But I have to look at 14 other players also and there is no place for looking at personal milestones," he added.

T20I series right around the corner

Meanwhile, the five-match T20I series between India and New Zealand is set to commence from January 21. This will be both the teams' final assignment heading into the 2026 T20 World Cup begins from February 7. It remains to be seen as to who will start the series strong and emerge victorious in the first T20I that will be played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Maharashtra.
