Pakistan's cricket team faces a significant setback as they prepare for the second Test against Australia, with fast bowler Khurram Shahzad being ruled out for the remainder of the series due to injury. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed in a statement on their website on December 21 that Shahzad has sustained a stress fracture in his rib and an abdominal muscle tear.
Shahzad's absence is a considerable loss for the team, considering his remarkable performance in the first Test where he claimed five wickets, including the notable dismissal of Australia's star batsman Steve Smith twice. The PCB announced that Shahzad would consult a specialist in Australia before returning to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore to undergo further injury management and rehabilitation.
"Khurram Shazad has been ruled out of the Test series against Australia due to a stress fracture in his left 10th rib, as well as an abdominal muscle tear," PCB said in a release.
"Fast bowler Khurram Shahzad complained of discomfort in his left side during the first Test.
"PCB will now consult a specialist in Australia after which a final management protocol will be established for the player.
"He will then return to the NCA in Lahore where he will continue his injury management and rehabilitation," the PCB added.
This latest injury adds to the growing list of concerns for the Pakistani squad. The team is already grappling with the absence of Naseem Shah, who is recovering from a long-term injury. Additionally, just days before the first Test in Perth, spinner Abrar Ahmed experienced leg discomfort and was ruled out of the match. Ahmed's participation in the remainder of the series remains uncertain due to his injury.
Despite these challenges, Pakistan has backup options to fill Shahzad's void. Mohammad Wasim Jr. and Hasan Ali are available to step in, offering some relief to the team's bowling lineup. Pakistan, looking to rebound after a heavy defeat in the first Test, will rely on these players to bolster their attack and bring competitive energy to the series.
The team's resilience will be tested as they navigate through these injury setbacks. The second Test presents an opportunity for the Pakistani side to regroup and showcase their depth in talent, aiming to level the series against a formidable Australian team.
