Pakistan's cricket team faced a steep challenge in the first Test of their three-match series in Australia, only to be decisively defeated by 360 runs on Day 4 at Perth's Optus Stadium, Sunday, December 17. This loss marked yet another chapter in Pakistan's long-standing struggle to secure a Test victory on Australian soil.

The Australian team, under Pat Cummins's leadership, showcased their dominance, dismissing Pakistan for a mere 89 runs, their third-lowest total in Australia. The match saw Pakistan collapsing in their final innings, failing to meet the formidable target of 450 runs set earlier by Australia. Despite expectations of a more resilient performance in the last innings of the series opener, the Pakistani batsmen couldn't withstand the pressure exerted by Australia's formidable bowling attack. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood claimed three wickets each, while spinner Nathan Lyon achieved a personal milestone by capturing his 500th Test wicket, joining the ranks of legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne.

This loss was not just a numerical defeat for Pakistan but a significant psychological blow as well, being the second largest in their Test history in terms of runs, following a 471-run defeat also in Perth back in 2004. Shan Masood, commencing his tenure as Test captain, faced a daunting challenge and the team's lackluster performance, particularly in the second innings, raised concerns about their competitiveness. The defeat extends Pakistan's losing streak in Australia to 15 consecutive Tests, a series of defeats stretching back to their last victory in 1995.

This result underscores the challenges facing Pakistan's cricket team in adapting to Australian conditions and the need for a strategic rethink in their approach to playing in such challenging environments. The team will have to reassess and regroup quickly as they prepare for the remaining matches in the series, hoping to break the long-standing jinx of not winning a Test match in Australia.
