From 200 vs West Indies to 103 vs England: Virat Kohli's 4 Test centuries away from home in winning cause
No other Indian batter has scored more runs on foreign soil in Test cricket since Virat Kohli's debut in the format.

Since Virat Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 against West Indies, only three batters -- England's Joe Root (6,214), Pakistan's Azhar Ali (5,644 runs) and Australia's Steve Smith (5,156) -- have scored more runs in away matches in the format. As Kohli announces his retirement from Test cricket, here is a look at Kohli's four Test centuries away from home in a winning cause -

In 2016, Virat Kohli as captain scored 200 runs from 283 balls against West Indies in North Sound. He helped India post 566/8 before declaring. India won the match by an innings and 92 runs. R Ashwin won the 'Player of the match' for his 113-run knock and seven scalps.

In 2017, Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 103 from 136 balls in India's second innings against Sri Lanka in Galle. After Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara's centuries helped India post 600 in the first innings, the visitors won the Test by a huge margin of 304 runs.

The most prominent knock among these four centuries came against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, in 2018. Kohli overcame a forgettable 2014 tour and registered scores of 97, 103 in India's 203-run win in third Test of the series.

Virat Kohli's last Test century came on foreign soil in a winning cause. Kohli scored an unbeaten 100 against Australia in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 opener at Perth Stadium. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a century in the innings as well. Captain Jasprit Bumrah was named 'Player of the match' for taking 8 wickets including a fifer in India's 295-run win.

The only other time Kohli came close to a Test century in winning cause away from home was in 2018 against Australia. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, he scored 82 runs from 204 balls and shared a crucial partnership with centurion Cheteshwar Pujara. India won the Test by 137 runs as Jasprit Bumrah took nine wickets including a six-fer.

Since Kohli's Test debut, no other batter has scored more runs than him away from home. He has 4,894 runs from 68 Tests at an average of 41.22, including 16 centuries and 18 half-centuries on foreign soil. The next Indian on the list is Ajinkya Rahane (3,582 runs from 53 Tests) followed by Cheteshwar Pujara (3,325 runs from 50 Tests).
