Temba Bavuma scripts history after winning WTC Final, joins elite club featuring Rohit Sharma and Imran Khan

South Africa made history by defeating Australia in the final of the 2025 World Test Championship, securing their first ICC trophy in 27 years.
 

Temba Bavuma became the first black captain to lead South Africa to an ICC title. He also became the first South African captain to defeat Australia in the final of any ICC tournament, including the World Test Championship.
 

With this achievement, Bavuma joined an elite group of captains who led their teams to ICC trophies at an older age, alongside Imran Khan and Rohit Sharma.
 

Imran Khan of Pakistan tops the list as the oldest captain to win an ICC trophy, having led his team to victory in the 1992 ODI World Cup at the age of 39 years and 172 days.
 

Following him is Rohit Sharma, who led India to the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup title at the age of 37 years and 60 days, and previously to the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy at the age of 37 years and 313 days.
 

Brian Lara of the West Indies ranks next, having won the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy as captain at 35 years and 146 days.
 

Temba Bavuma now joins this distinguished list, having won the 2025 World Test Championship for South Africa at the age of 35 years and 27 days, a milestone that also helped shed the long-standing “chokers” tag associated with South African cricket.
