Mumbai's stalwart Shardul Thakur steps up in defense of Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane amidst their current struggles, highlighting the importance of support over criticism during tough times. Both Iyer and Rahane, renowned for their significant contributions to Indian and Mumbai cricket, faced difficulties, managing only 7 runs each in the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha. Despite their current form, Thakur's rescue act of a 69-ball 75 pushed Mumbai to a respectable total of 224.

Addressing the media, Thakur emphasised that now is not the time to point fingers at Iyer and Rahane, recalling their history as proven match-winners.

"Ajinkya is not scoring runs throughout the season. He is not in the greatest of the forms. We cannot blame him as it is just a phase for him where he is not getting runs," said Shardul to PTI.

"It's just a rough patch for them. That's what I would say (about) Shreyas (and) Ajinkya. These guys have been absolute match-winners for Mumbai and India.'

"Right now, it's not their time; it's time to support them rather than criticsing them because it's easy to criticise," he added.

Struggle continues for Rahane and Iyer

Rahane's journey has seen challenges lately, especially after stepping down from his role in the Indian Test team. His recent domestic performances have been underwhelming, with just 141 runs from eight matches in this Ranji season, averaging a modest 12.81 and managing just one fifty. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer's season has been far from his best, with only 58 runs from three matches, resulting in an average of 19.33. This dip in form led to Iyer losing his central contract with the BCCI.

Shardul commends Rahane and Iyer's dedication

He commended their dedication on the field and their exemplary influence within the team environment, underscoring their status as role models in the dressing room.

"Ajinkya has not scored runs but his attitude on the fielding is top notch. A lot of youngsters coming from U-23 and U-19 cricket in Mumbai don't have the attitude that he has. You see him in the slips, even if he is fielded for 80 overs, he will sprint (to) save (those) four runs," Thakur said.

"Shreyas moves around the field like a tiger. He absolutely gives everything that he has on the field. Both of them are role models when they are in the dressing room," he added.

Through Thakur's words, it's clear that the essence of teamwork and collective support is crucial, especially when players encounter a rough patch. The emphasis on rallying behind experienced players like Iyer and Rahane serves as a reminder of their invaluable contributions and the potential for resurgence with the right backing.
