Shreyas Iyer experienced a setback during his first appearance at the crease in the Ranji Trophy 2024 final.

Iyer was dismissed for just seven runs by veteran pacer Umesh Yadav.

Star Team India and Mumbai batter, Shreyas Iyer's rough patch with the bat continued on March 10 (Sunday) when the right-handed batter was dismissed cheaply on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha. While Iyer managing to score just seven runs in a big game was a concerning sign, what raised eyebrows even more was how the Mumbai batter was dismissed. For the umpteenth time, Iyer became a victim of a short delivery that was superbly executed by veteran pacer Umesh Yadav.

Shreyas Iyer's dismissal in Ranji Trophy final

Attempting to make an impact in the Ranji Trophy final, Shreyas Iyer experienced a setback during his first appearance at the crease. Entering the fray after Mumbai lost three early wickets by the 25th over, Iyer faced the challenge of anchoring the innings. However, he struggled to make his mark.

Facing a delivery from the experienced bowler Umesh Yadav, Iyer was caught off guard. Yadav delivered a ball just short of a good length, outside the off stump, tempting Iyer to play a shot. Positioned on his back foot in anticipation of a shorter ball, Iyer misjudged the delivery. This misstep led him to edge the ball awkwardly, without proper control, directly to Karun Nair at first slip, resulting in his early dismissal.

Back-to-back failures for Shreyas Iyer

In his second consecutive innings in Ranji Trophy, Iyer failed to make an impact with the bat. In the only innings he batted during the semi-final against Tamil Nadu, Iyer was dismissed for a score of just three runs. With his latest dismissal for just seven runs, Iyer has accumulated just 10 runs in two outings after making a return to Ranji Trophy.

Pressure on Shreyas Iyer

Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped to axe on Iyer and cut the Mumbai batter from the centrally contracted players list. The decision came after Iyer missed Mumbai's Ranji Trophy matches despite constant warnings from the Indian cricket board, urging players to prioritise domestic cricket.
