WTC Points Table: South Africa's loss to Australia boosts India's final hopes

Australia routed South Africa in the Boxing Day Test by an innings and 182 runs to claim the three-match Test series 2-0 with a match to spare. With series in pocket, Australia continued their supremacy in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table while South Africa dropped to fourth spot after their back to back drubbing at the hands of Kangaroos.

Australia's triumph came as a blessing in disguise for India, whose WTC final hopes got a massive boost as they are nipping behind Australia for the coveted spot.

This is how the updated WTC points table looks like after Pat Cummins' led side's resounding win over Proteas in the second Test.

The Pat Cummins-led Australia remain top of the points table with a win percentage of 78.57. They can further improve their win percentage if they beat South Africa in the third and final Test.

India, following their 2-0 series win over Bangladesh last week, remain second. They have a win percentage of 58.93, ahead of a four-match Test series against Australia on home soil next year. If India could win three of those four games, they will comfortably book a spot in the World Test Championship final next year.

Sri Lanka and South Africa exchange places and are now third and fourth with a win percentage of 53.3 and 50, respectively.

England are fifth in the table after clean sweeping Pakistan 3-0. The Ben Stokes-led side has a win percentage of 46.97.

With a win percentage of 40.91, West Indies are behind them on sixth.

Pakistan and New Zealand, who are currently squaring off in the first Test of a two-match series in Karachi, are seventh and eighth with win percentages of 38.89 and 25.93, respectively. With a poor win percentage of 11.11, Bangladesh sit at the bottom of the points table.

Meanwhile talking about the match, David Warner's dazzling double century, which ended his three-year Test ton drought, Alex Carey's phenomenal cent and Cameron Green's fiery fifer hogged limelight with their exceptional performances which didn't let the South African come out of the shambles from the word go.

The hosts declared on 575/8 on Day three with an ominous lead of 386 after South Africa were bowled out in their first innings for 189.

Starting from 15/1 on the Day 4, none of the South Africa batters could convert their starts as they kept losing wickets in regular intervals. Only Temba Bavuma (65) tried to give some fight back. Only a miracle could save South Africa and it didn't come. They were wrapped in 204 as Nathan Lyon returned with maximum 3/58 for the winners.
