Notably, it was Kohl's 53rd century in the format, which was scored at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. Reaching the mark in 90 balls, it continued a dominant run of form for the batter, who had previously smashed 135 runs off 120 deliveries to help India secure a 17-run victory in the first ODI in Ranchi.

With this innings, Kohli has now tallied 84 international centuries overall. He continues to close the gap on cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the all-time record with 100 international centuries.

India post 358/5 riding on Kohli, Gaikwad's centuries

India ended up posting a formidable total of 358/5, driven by stellar centuries from Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad's centuries. Kohli continued his blistering form, scoring 102 off 93 balls. Meanwhile, Gaikwad cracked his maiden ODI ton, smashing 105 runs off just 83 deliveries. The pair came together with India in a spot of bother at 62 for two, but they quickly turned the tide with a record-breaking partnership. Together, they added 195 runs for the third wicket, setting a new record for India's highest partnership for any wicket against South Africa in the ODI format. Following their departure, KL Rahul provided a late surge to the innings, scoring a well-measured, unbeaten 66 to record his second successive fifty of the series.

South Africa’s efforts to contain the scoring were hampered by injury and pitch conditions. Their struggles deepened when pacer Nandre Burger was forced to leave the field in his seventh over due to an ankle niggle. Marco Jansen emerged as the visitors' most successful bowler, claiming 2 for 63 by utilizing short-pitched deliveries effectively on the easy-paced track.
