Former India opener Abhinav Mukund suggested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they should go with spilit captaincy after Shubman Gill got an injury during the 1st Test match of the Freedom Trophy against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Mukund's advice to Shubman Gill
Gill, who has been playing continuous cricket since getting appointed as Rohit Sharma's successor to lead India in Tests, got a neck injury during the first innings. Gill felt pain in his neck immediately after executing a sweep for four off South Africa spinner Simon Harmer, and had left the field after receiving some initial treatment from the team's medical staff. After that, the batter was hospitalised and missed the rest of the Test match. Mukund, who represented India in seven Tests, reckons that Shubman Gill has it in him to become an all-format captain, but the Indian Cricket Board should go for spilit captaincy.
“I think Shubman has it in him to become an all-format captain, but I don't think India should have an all-format captain anymore” said Abhinav Mukund on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan
“Split captaincy is a smart move. Shubman Gill has been given the responsibility to take on the mantle in Tests and he will be under big pressure.”
Notably, South Africa defeated India in the first Test match by 30 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test match series and there are chances that Gill, who had not batted in the first Test, will be unavailable for the second clash as well which is scheduled to take place at ACA Stadium in Guwahati.
"A call on Shubham Gill will be taken in the next 24 hours. BCCI don't want to rush in Gill's case and with consultation of doctors call on him will be taken. Source Said as of now it's tough to say that he will play second test but lets see how he progresses in the next medical scan. if required he will be given proper time and rest. We will take a call" a BCCI source close to the development told Sports Tak.
