The squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa starting Thursday (October 06) was declared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday. The squad includes four uncapped players - Rajat Patidar, Mukesh Kumar, Shahbaz Ahmed and Rahul Tripathi. However, one name that again didn't make the cut is of the star batter Prithvi Shaw, who have been scoring runs in domestic cricket for some time now.
After the announcement of the squad, Shaw shared a cryptic message on his Instagram story that read, "Don't trust their words, trust their actions, because actions will prove why words are meaningless."
While the Delhi Capitals opener’s post doesn’t say much, it does reveal and hints at his anguish at being left out.
Shaw last played for India in July 2021 while being on the tour to Sri Lanka for the ODI series in the absence of star players who were in England for the test series.
He broke into the international scene with a promising start but despite that, his repeated failures and fitness soon showed him the door from the Indian team.
A suspension was imposed on him for the consumption of illegal substances which sidelined him for a long time and since then he is grappling to make his way back into the Indian team.
Though the star batter played two ODI against New Zealand A last month and amassed 97 runs, it was not enough to catch the selectors’ attention.
India’s ODI squad vs South Africa: Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubhman Gill, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Deepak Chahar
