The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on January 09 (Monday) confirmed that star paceman Jasprit Bumrah will miss the entire ODI series against Sri Lanka. The Indian cricket board in a release confirmed that the right-arm pacer 'will need some more time to build bowling resilience, while no replacement has been named for the 29-year-old.

"Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka," BCCI said in a release.

"Bumrah, who was set to join the team in Guwahati ahead of the ODI series, will need some more time to build bowling resilience. This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has not named any replacement for Jasprit Bumrah,” the release added.

India’s updated squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

Earlier in the day, Sports Tak had confirmed that Bumrah will miss the ODI series against the Islanders after a source had revealed that the BCCI doesn't want to rush Bumrah back into the national setup with multiple big-ticket bilateral and multinational tournaments scheduled to be played in 2023.

"BCCI has taken the call not to rush with (Jasprit) Bumrah as we need him fit for major tournaments which are planned this year," a source told Sports Tak on the condition of anonymity.

The right-arm pacer was initially not included in the ODI squad but on January 03, the Indian cricket board announced the Mumbai Indians pacer has been roped into the squad.

"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka," the media advisory released by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on January 03 read.

"Bumrah was out of cricketing action since September 2022 and was also ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to a back injury. The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon," it added.

India's pace spearhead last featured for the Men in Blues in the T20Is series against Australia at home back in September in 2022. Struggling with the stress fracture in his back, Bumrah was also ruled out of the marquee T20 World Cup 2022.
