India captain and champion batter, Rohit Sharma got two starts in the three-match series against Sri Lanka. The stylish batter stroked 83 runs off 67 balls in the first ODI and 42 runs off 49 balls in the third and final match. Despite getting off to brilliant starts, the Hitman, for some strange reasons, has failed to convert them into daddy hundreds. Remember, Rohit is the only batter with three double tons in ODI cricket.
Former India captain and 2011 World Cup winner, Gautam Gambhir criticised Rohit after the latter failed to register a big score despite getting off to a start.
"I think we should talk to him in the same space like we used to when Virat didn't get a 100 in last three and a half years. So we should be equally hard on Rohit Sharma because 50 innings in international cricket is quite a lot," said Gambhir on Star Sports.
It has been 50 international innings since Rohit scored a century. He scored five tons during the 2019 ODI World Cup and with the ICC tournament scheduled to be held in India later in the year, the Men in Blue need their skipper in prime form with the bat.
"It's not you didn't get a 100 in one or two series, and that is one thing that is missing in Rohit's game from the last World Cup. He used to get those big 100s, this time he's looking in good form, he's hitting the ball well but he has to convert. One thing that has stood out for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and Virat has got it back, Rohit Sharma need to get it back at least before the World Cup because these two guys will be extremely important if India has to go all the way and win the World Cup," the two-time World Cup winner added.
Rohit will have another three chances to end his century drought when India takes on New Zealand in the three-match ODI series, starting January 18.
