'...maybe I should just throw in a little dive': Kane Williamson reveals he did not expect a throw at his end in Christchurch last-ball thriller

Former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is something that will be watched over and over again for years, maybe decades by cricket enthusiast. The full stretch dive helped Williamson complete the run and win the Christchurch Test off the last ball of Day 5. Few days later, Williamson has revealed that it was more of an instinct to dive and he did not expect the throw at this end, let alone a direct hit from Asitha Fernando.

“I didn’t look overly agile there,” he told reporters in a press conference ahead of Wellington Test.

“And to be honest it was a little bit of an afterthought because I knew the throw would go to Neil’s (Wagner) end and I just sort of thought getting towards the crease maybe I should just throw in a little dive in case and I was kind of in a position to do it.

“But you know an amazing game of cricket to be part of and both the teams competed against each other throughout the five days and all results were on the table before going into Day 5,” he added.

Williamson’s unbeaten 121 helped New Zealand pull off an unlikely win over Dimuth Karunaratne-led side. Earlier, they were involved in a rare one-run win over England where Neil Wagner dismissed James Anderson.

“That’s special for Test cricket. It’s great that we have a couple of those experiences and hopefully you know there’s plenty of people who are enjoying it,” the 32-year-old said.

Williamson was also asked to pick the best win out of the last two Tests to which he replied, “We just wanted to get across the line as a team, be it of the slimmest of margins.”

Williamson also put an end to his retirement rumours by simply saying he is not that old.

“Oh you caught be off guard. I am not that old and I am really enjoying the challenges that come in the international game,” the Kiwi batter said.

In a few weeks time Williamson will join defending champions Gujarat Titans in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He will also skip the ODI series against Sri Lanka to join the Hardik Pandya-led side.

“I am fortunate to be part of the IPL over the years. I am excited to join a different team. It will be a different experience for sure,” he said.
