Major mess during New Zealand and Sri Lanka match after player not given run out because 'bails' battery was dead'

SportsTak

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are currently playing a three-match ODI series, with the hosts thrashing Lanka by 198 runs to win the first match in Auckland. Despite this win, there were two separate moments that would have grabbed the headlines if not for the massive defeat.

With the Lankans reeling at 62 for 8, bowler Blair Tickner managed to run Chamika Karunaratne out... but luck was not on his side!

With a target of 275 needed for the win, the Sri Lankans folded like a pack of cards. In the 18th over of the second innings, Karunaratne tried to take a second run, but a New Zealand player quickly collected the ball and threw it to Tickne, with Karunaratne out of his crease.

According to the rules, when a player hit the bails with his hand and the ball is in his hands then it is considered a wicket. The bails have to fall off as well. However, on this occasion, the battery of the lights on the stumps and the bails had died out, which meant that the player was not even given the wicket.

This was not even the first weird incident involving bails during this match.

In the first innings, Opener Finn Allen was on nine runs off six balls when a full around off delivery from Kasun Rajitha clipped the off stump. However, the bails did not fall off, nor did the light sensors go off despite everyone on the field and in the stadium hearing a big noise as everyone thought that the batter was bowled.

Upon replaying the moment, it was clear that the ball clipped the stump but the bails failed to respond. The same was confirmed by Ultra Edge, which showed a massive spike when the ball hit the stumps.

It was really a lucky moment for Allen, who used the chance to score 51 off 49 before he hit a ball off Chamika Karunaratne straight to Rajitha, leaving the Black Caps 108-3 in the 19th over.
