Batters getting lbw is a common dismissal but have you heard several batters getting out in the same way? On September 13, in a women's T20I clash between Thailand and Zimbabwe, as many as eight batters got out leg before wicket.
It ended up breaking an 11-year-old record. In 2011, six batters got out lbw in a T20I between West Indies and Pakistan. Interestingly, the match's winner was decided in a super over.
The women's T20I Quadrangular Series (in UAE) at Dubai did not feature one of those outrageous scorecards where a team is bundled out for an extremely low score.
In the first innings, three of Thailand batters got out lbw as they managed to post 102/5 on the board. Zimbabwe’s Nomvelo Sibanda dismissed trapped two of Thailand's top-order batters in front of the wickets to put them under pressure. Opener Nannapat Koncharoeknai top-scored with 28 runs off 46 deliveries including two fours.
In the run chase, as many as five Zimbabwe batters got out lbw which helped them rewrite record books of the format. Also, this is the fourth time five batters have got out lbw in an innings.
Despite suffering a middle-order collapse, Zimbabwe won the match by three wickets with eight balls to spare. Opener Sharne Mayers stood out with 29-ball 48 in a match where runs did not flow easily.
While this is the first instance of eight lbws in a women’s T20I match, in men's cricket it has happened once as well. Coincidentally, Zimbabwe were involved in the T20I against Netherlands. Out of 20 wickets that fell in the T20I, eight were lbws.
