The white-ball series between India and Bangladesh, initially planned for August, might be rescheduled. This delay is contingent upon receiving clearance from the Indian government, according to a senior official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) who clarified on July 2 that the tour is not being cancelled outright. The series, which is a part of the ICC's Future Tours Programme (FTP), includes three One Day International matches and three T20 International matches, with the first game scheduled to take place in Dhaka on August 17. However, the tour's timeline has become uncertain due to existing diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh, coupled with recent political developments in the latter nation.
India tour of Bangladesh to be rescheduled?
As per a report by AFP, Iftikhar Rahman, the chairman of the BCB's media committee, hinted that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated the possibility of a rescheduling of the series.
"The tour is part of the FTP (International Cricket Council’s Future Tours Programme), so cancellation is not an option. But it may be rescheduled to a mutually convenient time," Iftikhar Rahman said, as quoted by AFP.
However, he he did not provide any specific dates for when this might occur.
While the BCCI has refrained from making any public statements on the matter, reports from Indian media outlets have corroborated that the tour is currently awaiting official approval from the Indian government. This requirement for government clearance reportedly stems from the strained relationship between the two countries following the widespread protests that led to the removal of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
The last time India hosted Bangladesh was in September and October of 2024 for a series encompassing both red-ball and white-ball cricket, which included two Test matches and two T20 International matches. With the scheduled start of the upcoming tour just a few weeks away, both the BCB and the BCCI are now expected to engage in discussions to identify alternative dates that will be suitable for both cricket boards. Notably, the ODI series would mark the first appearance of veteran cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in this format since their retirements from Test cricket. Both players had previously stepped away from T20 Internationals after their team's victory in the T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean in 2024. Having bid farewell to Test cricket, ODIs remain the only format they are actively participating in. However, it remains uncertain whether they will be included in the squad if the tour ultimately proceeds as rescheduled.
