Hardik Pandya will not play Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026 due to injury riddle

In his absence, his brother Krunal Pandya will lead the Baroda's pack

The persistent fitness struggles of India's premier fast-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya, have taken yet another frustrating turn. In what comes as a massive blow to both his domestic side and national team aspirations, Hardik’s anticipated competitive comeback has been further delayed. He has officially been ruled out of the 2026 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, as he continues to navigate a complex, multi-layered injury riddle.

In his absence, his elder brother and seasoned campaigner, Krunal Pandya, has been appointed to lead the 15-member Baroda squad in the marquee domestic T20 championship.   Hardik's latest fitness setback—a fresh shin injury sustained during his rehabilitation—has pushed back his return to international cricket indefinitely. Having not played a single competitive match since the end of May 2026, the 33-year-old all-rounder finds himself sidelined at a crucial juncture of India’s white-ball calendar, extending a troubling period of missing consecutive bilateral series and tournaments.

Pandya's persistent injury riddle and delayed comeback

Hardik Pandya's injury history has long been a source of concern for the Indian cricket management, but the post-IPL 2026 period has proven to be particularly demanding. The all-rounder last stepped onto a cricket pitch on May 24, 2026, during Mumbai Indians' final fixture of IPL 2026. Since then, he has spent extensive time undergoing assessment, treatment, and physical conditioning at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

What was initially expected to be a brief period of load management and recovery after a grueling IPL season quickly evolved into a protracted struggle against multiple physical ailments.   Back Spasms & Leg Strain: Hardik's physical issues surfaced during the latter stages of IPL 2026, where back spasms forced him to sit out four matches for Mumbai Indians. Subsequent rehabilitation at the CoE triggered secondary leg strains as his body adapted to bowling workloads.

Knee Pain: During fielding and bowling drills ahead of white-ball assignments, Pandya reported discomfort and pain around his right knee, forcing medical staff to push back his return date.

Fresh Shin Injury: The definitive setback arrived when Hardik was named in the India A squad for the one-day series against Australia A in October 2026, subject to medical clearance. While bowling during intensity sessions, he complained of pain in his lower leg. Reportedly, detailed scans revealed a fresh shin stress injury, prompting Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and the CoE medical team to advise two weeks of complete rest, followed by a phased rehabilitation program.

Because Hardik was not completely pain-free while bowling, medical experts advised against rushing him back into competitive matches without achieving 100% operational fitness. Given the heavy demands placed on a seam-bowling all-rounder's body, the medical panel opted to exercise extreme caution, officially ruling him out of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Krunal Pandya takes the helm for Baroda

With Hardik unavailable, the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) named experienced all-rounder Krunal Pandya as the captain of Baroda's 15-member squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Krunal, who has been a pillar of consistency for Baroda over the years, steps into the leadership role with extensive domestic and franchise experience. Known for his tactical acumen, fiery passion, and dependable left-arm spin and middle-order batting, Krunal brings crucial stability to a dynamic Baroda squad looking to make a deep run in the tournament.

Krunal's leadership will be vital as Baroda adapts to playing without Hardik’s match-winning capability with both bat and ball. The elder sibling's presence as captain provides leadership continuity for a state team that has regularly produced elite white-ball talent for the national pipeline.

The timing of this fresh shin injury is particularly frustrating for the Indian national team management and white-ball captaincy considerations. Hardik was slated to use the India A series against Australia A and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as crucial domestic testing grounds to prove his match fitness before rejoining the Indian senior squad. The BCCI's medical team has adopted a strict policy: Hardik must complete a progressive running, bowling, and sprinting workload without experiencing pain before being cleared for international selection. Because fast bowling places up to eight times a player's body weight through the front leg during landing, a shin stress injury carries high recurrence risks if rushed. Consequently, Hardik’s international return has been pushed back even further. National selectors have made it clear that while Hardik remains vital to India's long-term white-ball strategy, he will only be considered once he achieves full match-fitness through domestic fixtures.

Series and tournaments missed by Hardik Pandya since IPL 2026

Hardik Pandya’s summer and autumn of 2026 have been defined by recovery rooms rather than competitive cricket. Since the conclusion of IPL 2026 in May, he has missed every single international assignment and domestic event India has participated in.

  • India tour of Ireland (T20I Series)
  • India tour of England (ODI & T20I Series)
  • India tour of Zimbabwe (T20I Series)
  • Afghanistan tour of India (ODI Series)
  • India A vs Australia A (One-Day Series)
  • India tour of Japan (1-off T20I)
  • Asian Games Men's T20 Tournament
  • India tour of Afghanistan (T20I series)
  • West Indies tour of India (T20I, ODI series)
  • India vs New Zealand White-Ball Series (5 T20Is & 5 ODIs)

With the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy off the table, the medical roadmap for Hardik Pandya focuses heavily on gradual rehabilitation. The primary goal for both the BCCI medical staff and Hardik is ensuring complete recovery without further setbacks.   While Indian cricket fans eagerly await the return of their star all-rounder, Baroda will push forward in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy under Krunal Pandya's leadership. For Hardik, the immediate focus remains on returning to painless bowling at the Centre of Excellence before making his long-awaited comeback to the field.
