Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) continue their brilliant transfer window after confirming the signing of Australian striker Jason Cummings ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season. Cummings is by far the most high-profile transfer of the season, with the 27-year-old playing in the FIFA World Cup with his Australia, even reaching the Round of 16 where they narrowly lost to eventual champions Argentina.
Jason Cummings made his World Cup debut in Australia's opening match against France, coming on as a substitute in the 56th minute.
The Scottish-born forward began his professional career in his home country and even represented Scotland at the youth level. However, despite making an appearance for Scotland in an international friendly against the Netherlands, making his debut in September before travelling to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Cummings began his career with Scottish giants Hibernian and also spent some time with English Premier League (EPL) side Nottingham Forest. However, with the latter, he spent most of his contract on loan at teams like Rangers, Peterborough United and Luton Town.
The Australian last played for Shrewsbury Town and then Dundee United back in Scotland before leaving Europe to join Australian side Central Coast Mariners in January 2022.
Cummings has been in top form in the A-League Men. He made his debut against Sydney FC and went on to score 30 goals in 49 appearances, including a brilliant hat-trick in a 6–1 victory over Melbourne City in the 2023 A-League Men Grand Final, receiving the Joe Marston Medal as the Grand Final's player of the match.
“I have been observing Indian club football for the last few years. When Mohun Bagan Super Giant approached me, I started to inquire about the club and got to know about the rich heritage of this century-old club. Besides, this club has achieved the status of being the best club in India by winning the Hero ISL title. I am hopeful that I will help them add more trophies to their trophy cabinet in the upcoming three years,” said Cummings after signing on the dotted line.
“Everyone knows how good of a footballer Jason is. He enjoys playing a highly attacking and pressing style of football, which perfectly aligns with my strategy. He possesses excellent ball control, creates space for others, and is clinical in front of goal. Another admirable quality of his is - that he is a perfect team player,” lauded head coach Juan Ferrando.
“It is a huge thing that a current World Cup player like Jason Cummings has agreed to come to India. This demonstrates the impact of the Hero ISL on the growth of Indian football,” Ferrando further added.
The Australian is the second foreign signing to the Mariners’ side in the ongoing transfer window after the arrival of Albanian forward Armando Sadiku.
