Legendary Indian batter Gautam Gambhir has been given an additional role as a mentor by the RPSG group, who announced that the two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winner joining the new RPSG-owned Durban Super Giants as their new mentor. The 40-year-old, who is also a mentor to IPL team Lucknow Supergiants — owned by the RPSG group — for the new South Africa T20 tournament called the CSA T20 challenge league.
Under his mentorship, LSG made it to the playoffs in their first season in the cash-rich league. Gambhir will now assume the mantle for the newly-formed South African league which will take the place of the Mzansi Super League. All six teams in this new league are owned by IPL sides.
Gambhir's cricketing knowledge is widespread, having captained the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders to two trophies in 2012 and 2014. More recently, he led the India Capitals to the trophy in the second season of the Legends League Cricket tournament.
“In my ideology of a team sport designations don’t play many roles. At best they are there to facilitate a process to make a team win. As a global mentor of Super Giants, I look forward to some added responsibility. My intensity and passion to win have just got international wings. It will be a proud moment to see the Super Giants family leave a global imprint. I thank the Super Giants family for showing their faith in me. Guess it’s time for some more sleepless nights,” the former India legend said in the official press release.
Taking to Twitter, he also expressed his gratitude to the Goenka group for showing faith in his ability as a mentor and was excited about his new role with the Durban Super Giants.
