Among the injured list for India ahead of the ODI series against Australia is star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been plagued with a back injury since the lower end of 2022. He has not played an international match since September 2022 and is also set to sit out the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Latest reports suggest that he has undergone a successful surgery in New Zealand, with a cooling-off period of six months to recover before he can finally hit the nets.

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir, in an interview with Hindustan Times, revealed that such injuries of the back and knee can end the careers of cricketers and he hoped that Bumrah could fight off these tough times and return to full fitness soon.

"What I feel is that Bumrah consistently played cricket for a long time, across formats, and then played in the IPL as well," Amir told Hindustan Times. "India too play cricket all around the year. He is human. At the end of the day, the body gets tired and it demands rest," the pacer added.

"I always say back and knee injuries for a bowler are two which I wouldn't even wish for my enemy. It tends to end the careers of cricketers. I hope he is strong and is recovering well," warned Amir who has battled with his fair share of injuries.

In Bumrah's absence, India's pace attack has faltered, but the veteran duo of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj have kept the team alive. The side will now concentrate on training the right bowling unit heading into the ODI World Cup 2023, which will be hosted in India during October and November.

"The bowler who has most impressed me is Mohammed Siraj. If you look at the recent past, he is the most improved bowler in any format. With him, you need to groom 1-2 young bowlers ready because, in about a year or two, players like Shami will also be sticking to a single format," Amir predicted.

Earlier, Mohammed Shami was also sidelined by the Indian team for the T20I format, but the bowler made a tremendous comeback into the side to pip Mohammed Siraj for the T20 World Cup hosted in Australia.
