Ravichandran Ashwin reckons that BCCI should introduce the Right to Match in auctions but with a twist. The BCCI is yet to announce the number of retentions and RTM cards for the next season of Indian Premier League (IPL). When BCCI last held a meeting with IPL teams some franchises are keen on having more than three retentions in mega auctions. On the other hand, their were teams who opposed the statement.
Talking about Ashwin he is not completely in favour of RTM. He feels that when a franchise releases a player, that means he is not their top four or five players.
“If a franchise has released a player because they don’t see him in their top four or five, then what gives them the right to jump in during an auction,” Ashwin said on Kris Srikkanth's YouTube show Cheeky Cheeka.
The Rajasthan Royals spinner suggested that BCCI should tweak the rule giving players the right to choose playing for a franchise or not.
Ravichandran Ashwin opened up on the Indian Premier League (IPL)'s impact player rule saying that when a franchise releases a player, that means he is not their top four or five players.
What is RTM?
Right to Match known as RTM is a rule through which teams can automatically get the player who represented them in the previous season if they match the highest bid placed by a franchise. The RTM rule was first introduced in 2014 and has not been used in IPL auctions since 2018.
The CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders Venky Mysore in the past had offered a suggestion that teams should be allowed to retain players if they have a fair market value. He also suggested that every team should have 8 RTM options to sign their former players back.
BCCI is expected to announce the number of retentions by the End of August according to Cricbuzz.
