India’s Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is a fiery character on the field. Jaiswal is not the one who puts his head down when sledged, he likes to give it back. In a recent interview, the young opener recalled how he got angry when teenager Sam Konstas sledged him during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025. Fielding in close-in position, Konstas faced the circumstances when Jaiswal purposely hit him with a shot. Also, it led to then-captain Rohit Sharma scolding him for an incident against Steve Smith later in the game.
"When I was batting, he was giving it to me. He’s a bit weird. When I was batting, he was forcefully saying things to me. I got a bit angry and said, ‘Okay’," Jaiswal said on Mashable India.
"Nathan Lyon bowled a ball, and I gave it a whack. Actually, I hit him on purpose that day. Later, I was fielding at silly point and Steve Smith was lifting his bat and I said, “Baap re”. It was a really flat wicket. That time, Rohit Sharma gave me some bamboo (scolding)."
Jaiswal finished his debut Australian tour with 391 runs from 10 innings at an average of 43.44, including two centuries and as many fifties. He was India’s highest run-scorer on the tour.
No place for Jaiswal in T20I squad
While Jaiswal has continued to perform well in overseas conditions in Test arena, he is yet to get his due in the white-ball formats. He did not get a place in the T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad as Shubman Gill was chosen ahead of him as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy. The southpaw is one of the non-travelling reserves for the tournaments.
Jaiswal’s next assignment
However, Jaiswal is content with the decision of selectors as it was based on team combination. He is currently preparing for the two-Test series against West Indies at home starting on October 2. It is uncertain whether he will be on the flight to Australia for the limited-overs series. It will be followed by a multi-format series at home against South Africa, including a two-Test series.
