Following a heroic batting display against England at Edgbaston, India captain Shubman Gill reached his career all-time high on the ICC Test batter rankings. The 25-year-old climbed 15 places to reach the sixth position on the rankings with 807 rating points after a batting masterclass in Birmingham which saw him record scores of 269 and 161 in the first and second inning respectively. He was also adjudged the Player of the Match as the Men in Blue defeated the hosts by 336 runs at Edgbaston to level the five-match series 1-1.
Gill made history in the second Test by becoming the first-ever batter in Test cricket to record a double-hundred and a 150-plus score in the same Test. This was also the Men in Blue's first-ever triumph at Edgbaston after they had failed to win any of their first seven Tests at the venue, making the victory a massive achievement for Gill & Co.
Brook has become the top Test batter in the world
On the other hand, Harry Brook managed to pip his own teammate Joe Root to become the premier Test batter with 886 rating points. This comes after the former played a sensational knock of 158 in England's first innings of the Edgbaston Test while the latter failed to deliver on both the occasions, leading to the hosts getting defeated in convincing fashion.
England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith made the cut into top 10 by climbing 16 places on the rankings following his incredible inning of 184 against India in Birmingham and followed that up with a gritty knock of 88 in the second innings. Meanwhile, both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant remained in the top 10 with the former staying on No.4 and the latter maintaining his No.7 spot.
Elsewhere, Jasprit Bumrah remained as the best Test bowler in the world with 898 rating points as no changes took place in the top 10. Both Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep made massive gains on the rankings following their heroic spells in the second Test. While Akash Deep finished with 10 wickets in the match, Siraj recorded figures of 6/70 in the first innings and these performances saw the former gain 39 places and reach the 45th spot while the latter climbed six places to reach the 22nd spot on the Test bowler rankings.
It will be interesting to see how the rankings will look like following the conclusion of the Lord's Test between India and England which is set to commence from July 10.
