Former India captain and ex-Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Sourav Ganguly on January 7 gave his verdict on the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in T20Is. Ganguly affirmed that the 'Hitman' should lead the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in June later in the year. Furthermore, the ex-India captain also stated that Kohli should be a part of India's T20I team.
When reporters asked about whether Rohit should lead India in the T20 World Cup, Ganguly affirmed "of course," and later went on to say that Kohli is an "outstanding player".
Talking about the quality of the current Indian side, Ganguly showered immense praise on the team's recent performance and affirmed that people start talking bad about the team only when they lose a match.
"India is a really good team. Just after it loses one match, people start speaking as if the team is bad. Team India has performed really well in ODI series, T20 series and Test series, this is a good sign," said Ganguly.
Talking about Rohit and Virat, the two stalwarts of Indian cricket have been absent from T20Is since India's semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup in November 2022.
Both players have reportedly indicated their willingness to return to the T20I format, posing a challenge for selectors who have been focusing on nurturing young talent throughout 2023. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, had discussions with senior players in South Africa, but a final decision on the team for the Afghanistan series is yet to be made.
The team has faced leadership challenges, with Hardik Pandya, the T20I captain for 2023, sidelined due to injury since the ODI World Cup, and Suryakumar Yadav, who led against Australia and South Africa, also out with an injury.
