The Delhi Capitals have signaled a fresh strategic direction for their pace attack ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season by appointing Sri Lankan legendary fast bowler Chaminda Vaas as their new fast bowling coach. Vaas steps into the role previously held by former Indian international Munaf Patel, completing a major overhaul in the franchise's backroom staff.
Chaminda Vaas becomes DC's fast bowling coach ahead of IPL 2027
The announcement marks Vaas’ return to the IPL ecosystem after 16 years. He previously featured as a player for the Deccan Chargers during the tournament’s initial years from 2008 to 2010, helping them secure the title in 2009. Now returning in a mentoring role, the Sri Lankan great brings decades of international experience and technical mastery to a franchise looking to rebuild its core and challenge for its maiden IPL trophy.

Delhi Capitals' coaching shake-up
The addition of Chaminda Vaas comes as part of a widespread revamp of the Delhi Capitals' management hierarchy.
They overhauled their management structure by releasing Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, Head Coach Hemang Badani, and Fast Bowling Coach Munaf Patel. Following two disappointing campaigns, the franchise made decisive leadership changes across the board. Sourav Ganguly taking over as Head Coach. Then Yuvraj Singh stepping in as assistant coach and batting coach. And now Vaas coming in as fast bowling coach.
The transition from Munaf Patel to Vaas represents a shift towards a more technically driven coaching style. While Patel brought a pragmatic, sharp understanding of modern domestic rhythms and Indian conditions, Vaas brings extensive experience in international bowling biomechanics, swing techniques, and match-planning across all formats.
What Chaminda Vaas brings to the table?
Chaminda Vaas remains one of the most decorated left-arm fast bowlers in the history of international cricket. Across an illustrious career spanning over 15 years, he anchored Sri Lanka’s pace attack in all conditions:
International Career Stats: 355 Test wickets (111 matches) and 400 ODI wickets (322 matches). Â 1996 ODI World Cup Winner: Played a crucial role in Sri Lanka's historic World Cup victory. Â Record ODI Figures: Holds the best bowling figures in ODI history (8/19 against Zimbabwe in 2001).
World Cup Record: The only bowler to take an international hat-trick off the first three balls of a World Cup match (against Bangladesh in 2003).
Beyond his playing accomplishments, Vaas has built an extensive coaching rĂ©sumĂ© over the past decade. He served as the primary fast bowling coach for the Sri Lankan national team across multiple stints (2013–2015 and later consultancy roles) and has coached across various global T20 leagues, including recent assignments in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). His deep understanding of movement with both the new ball and old ball makes him uniquely qualified to develop young fast bowlers. Â
Key Priorities for the Delhi Capitals Pace Attack
As Delhi Capitals prepare for IPL 2027, Vaas faces several tactical and developmental objectives with the fast bowling unit:
1. New-Ball Precision and Swing: Vaas’s signature skill throughout his playing days was his mastery over late inward and outward swing. Indian conditions often feature flat, high-scoring pitches where early breakthroughs in the Powerplay are essential. Coaching domestic seamers like Mukesh Kumar and young emerging pacers to generate movement in the opening overs will be an immediate priority.
2. Death-Over Variations: Modern T20 fast bowling relies heavily on subtle changes of pace, wide yorkers, and cutter variations. Vaas'Â strategic input will be crucial in refining execution under high-pressure, late-overs scenarios.
3. Left-Arm Angle Tactical Integration: As a premier left-arm seamer, Vaas provides specialised guidance to left-arm fast bowlers, aiding their wrist position, angles across right-handed batters, and deceptive seam alignment.
4. Player Workload and Fitness Management: With long tournament schedules and demanding travel, maintaining pace-bowler fitness and preventing injuries will be vital for sustaining performance throughout the IPL campaign.
Munaf’s tenure with DC provided valuable inputs grounded in deep familiarity with Indian domestic talent. His straightforward, calm approach helped guide younger bowlers through tough matches. By bringing in Vaas, Capitals are looking to layer that domestic foundation with elite technical refinement and international T20 strategy.Â
How did Delhi Capitals fare in last three seasons?
Since the inception of IPL in 2008, DC (formerly Delhi Daredevils) have remained one of the tournament's most unpredictable franchises. Despite fielding legendary players, world-class coaches, and promising young talent over the years, trophy success continues to elude the franchise. They remain one of the few original IPL teams yet to lift a single IPL title, with their closest run coming in 2020 when they finished as runners-up to Mumbai Indians.
Across the last three seasons, the Capitals have experienced persistent mid-table frustration, repeatedly failing to break into the top four playoff qualification spots.
IPL 2024: Delhi finished 6th in the 10-team points table, recording 7 wins and 7 losses from 14 league games. Despite inspiring performances following Rishabh Pant’s return to action, a negative net run rate (-0.377) ultimately barred them from securing a playoff berth.
IPL 2025: The story remained virtually identical. Under Axar Patel's captaincy, Delhi Capitals missed out on the playoffs once again, ending in 5th place with 7 wins and 6 losses. They remained in contention until the final week of league matches but were eliminated in crucial crunch games.
IPL 2026: Continuing the pattern of near-misses, Delhi Capitals again finished 6th on the points table. They compiled an exact balanced record of 7 wins and 7 losses in 14 matches, missing the cut for the top four.
But now with the combined leadership of Ganguly, Yuvraj, and Vaas, DC aim to construct a disciplined, lethal pace unit ready to deliver results in IPL 2027.Â
